Multipurpose 3d Modelling for Virtual Clinical Interventions

In this paper we summarize the approaches we made motivated by multi-purposes to build up 3D surface and solid models having the input of 2D consecutive slices usually captured by computer tomography. As the presented work is a part of a system for simulating and evaluating virtual surgical interventions, high quality visualization is an essential issue among our tasks. Moreover, as we use validated finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate the results of virtual interventions, we had to make our 3D geometries be easily accessible for FEA systems. As our main medical intention lays in biomechanical interventions (though not exclusively), a natural consequence was the integration of rapid prototyping (RT) support in our models, as well.
